THERAPY FOR
HELPING PROFESSIONALS STRUGGLING TO
“hold it all together”

Helping you overcome compassion fatigue, navigate challenges in the workplace, and prevent burnout.

as a HELPER

…you probably work really hard every day, helping those around you with all of their issues and demands. You may have found a passion to give your life to, but instead of feeling motivated and satisfied you’re left experiencing isolation and fatigue.

You often get overwhelmed caring for those around you and are emotionally worn out at the end of each day. No matter how much you give your life to others you can’t help but wonder, “Is this it? Isn’t there something more?”

Overtime you experience an ever-growing exhaustion. It’s more than just not enjoying your job. It can seep into every aspect of your life, making it difficult to relax, get good sleep, and fully enjoy the present moment. You may even have physical symptoms like headaches and digestive issues.

the expectations placed on helpers often leads to BURNOUT AND COMPASSION FATIGUE

It comes as no surprise that helping professionals often struggle with maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Whether they are educators, nurses, firefighters or any other role focused on providing care and service to others, the demands of their profession can take a toll on their health.

The nature of helpers’ work requires immense empathy and emotional energy. While they dedicate themselves to helping others, they may unintentionally neglect their own needs. Helping professionals often find themselves facing an unreasonable expectation to "do it all" for their clients or the public, even at the expense of their personal lives.

Moreover, the lack of boundaries in the helping professions can further exacerbate work/life balance challenges. Clients may need assistance outside regular working hours, leading to blurred lines between personal and professional time.

The pressure to always appear in control and composed can also take a toll. Helping professionals may find it extra challenging to seek support or admit vulnerability.

Despite the vital role they play in society, there is often little space for helping professionals to prioritize their well-being and personal growth.

Therapy can offer a safe and non-judgmental space for helping professionals to explore their challenges and emotions. Through the support of the counseling relationship, you can understand why you feel the way you feel and take steps to align your life.

therapy for helpers AT TRENT SULLIVAN COUNSELING

As a therapist, I primarily work with helping professionals and millennials struggling with stress and overwhelm. I value connecting with my clients from a deep, connective place and creating an inviting environment where we can work together to achieve solutions to your biggest problems.

Counseling for helping professionals can help you:

  • Connect with yourself

  • Develop helpful coping techniques

  • Manage career-related stress

  • Identify your needs

  • Set healthy boundaries

The therapeutic process is designed to help you integrate all aspects of yourself so that you can relate to your life in a new way.

SESSIONS DESIGNED TO HELP you

Like many clinicians, I don’t subscribe to any “one” treatment approach. Instead, I work with each person to find an approach that fits their individual needs.

Generally, I utilize the following approaches:

  • Relational Psychodynamics

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy

  • Attachment-Based Therapy

  • Existential Therapy

While I leverage these approaches, the relationship between the client and therapist is the most powerful tool we have in counseling. That’s why it’s so critical you feel comfortable and connect with your therapist. I aim to connect with my clients in a way that supports self-reflection, integration, and courage.

The demands placed on helpers are significant, but therapy is a tool for you to feel more connected and whole. Working together, we can improve your life in ways that extend beyond your current issues.

QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THERAPY IS right for you?

  • Helping professionals are particularly vulnerable to burnout and compassion fatigue, partly due to the misconception that they don't need support themselves. This stigma can actually be the problem that causes you to stay in a stress cycle.

Therapy can serve as a proactive and preventive measure to work against this unreasonable expectation.

  • This is a valid concern for many of us based upon our life’s experiences. Through the therapeutic relationship, I will provide a framework to support your ability to process emotions and embark on self-discovery. The reality is that avoiding your emotions is often the fuel that keeps you in a cycle of burnout and compassion fatigue. This is important work! But it’s easier with the support of a skilled therapist.

  • Absolutely! While there are approaches to therapy that focus on changing behaviors to reduce symptoms, I use an approach that focuses on the whole self. We’ll look deep to identify the root cause of your burnout and fatigue and develop ways to integrate your emotions and experiences to find balance.
